(BEIJING, January 28)-- The main design feature of the
"Water Cube" is the "bubbles." The membrane structure of the "Water Cube," which
is composed of more than 3,000 pneumatic die cushions with a coverage area of
110, 000 square meters, is the largest in the world. The "Water Cube" is also
the only public building that is fully made of a membrane structure.
The National Aquatic Center has a beautiful nickname -- the "Water Cube."
This is an architectural building that literally embodies the water theme. The
blue "bubbles" made of ETFE membrane fully showcase the grace and sensitivity of
water in accordance with the bubbles-like design of its supporting
structure.
Additionally, the membrane material is densely covered by over 100 million
plating dots to reduce reflection and heat energy penetrating into the venue. As
a result, the building is able to avoid dizzying sunlight and green-house
effects during the humid August.
The matrix of the plating dots on cubical membrane walls is different to
balance the natural illumination and temp28ature in the daytime.
According to Zheng Fang, the top designer of the Chinese-side design company,
plating dots on the membrane materials can save thirty percent of the energy
sources by changing the radiation and insulating the redundant heat energy. Just
like numerous umbrellas, the physical heat insulation effect of plating dots
prevents the gigantic bubble-like architecture from over-heating, with
comfortable temperatures and enough sunlight.
